13.5 Electromagnetic Induction
Physicist Michael Faraday found that if you move a magnet inside a solenoid there will be current flow in the wire of the solenoid. This current is said to be induced by the change of the magnetic field due to the motion of the magnet. The same can be observed if the solenoid is moved inside a magnetic field. The current generated is called induced current and the potential difference between the two terminals is said to be induced potential difference.
Direction of the induced current can be determined by Fleming’s Right Hand Rule.
Fleming’s Right Hand Rule:
Stretch the thumb, forefinger and middle finger of right hand so that they are perpendicular to each other, as shown in the below figure . If the forefinger indicates the direction of the magnetic field and the thumb shows the direction of motion of conductor, then the middle finger will show the direction of induced current.
